Posterior medial corticothalamic connectivity and consciousness.

چکیده
In a foundational study published in this issue of Annals of Neurology, Fernández-Espejo et al1 report that diagnostic categories of disorders of consciousness can be stratified by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of connections among specific components of the defaultmode network (DMN).2 The DMN includes the corticocortical and thalamocortical connections of the medial prefrontal, posterior medial regions (including the posterior cingulate [PCC] and precuneus [PCu]) and the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), which are identified by functional neuroimaging techniques to demonstrate strong functional connectivity.2, 3 he DMN contains some of the most metabolically active regions of the human brain at rest4 and is proposed to play a key role in maintaining a state of readiness of internal representations accessed during self-monitoring or shaping of motivated actions.5 Prior studies have linked outcomes of vegetative state (VS) and minimally conscious state (MCS) after brain injuries to the strength of correlation of blood oxygen level-dependent signals across the DMN.6

Impaired consciousness is linked to changes in effective connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex within the default mode network
The intrinsic connectivity of the default mode network has been associated with the level of consciousness in patients with severe brain injury. Especially medial parietal regions are considered to be highly involved in impaired consciousness. To better understand what aspect of this intrinsic architecture is linked to consciousness, we applied spectral dynamic causal modeling to assess effecti...
متن کاملThe dual pattern of corticothalamic projection of the primary auditory cortex in macaque monkey.
The distribution and terminal morphology of the corticothalamic projection originating from the primary auditory cortex (A1) were established in a macaque monkey, using the anterograde (and retrograde) tracer biotinylated dextran amine. A dense corticothalamic projection from A1 was found in the ventral (vMGB) and dorsal (dMGB) divisions of the medial geniculate body and, to a lesser extent, in...
متن کاملDisrupting posterior cingulate connectivity disconnects consciousness from the external environment.
Neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies including both patients with disorders of consciousness and healthy subjects with modified states of consciousness suggest a crucial role of the medial posteroparietal cortex in conscious information processing. However no direct neuropsychological evidence supports this hypothesis and studies including patients with restricted lesions of this brain r...
متن کاملCorticothalamic projections from the rat primary somatosensory cortex.
To study the cells of origin of corticothalamic inputs to the ventral posterior and posterior medial nuclei of the somatosensory thalamus in rats, we injected small aliquots of tracer into each nucleus and analyzed the pattern of retrograde labeling in the posteromedial barrel subfield of primary somatosensory cortex, which can be divided into barrel and nonbarrel zones. The ventral posterior n...
متن کاملIdentifying Corticothalamic Network Epicenters in Patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Corticothalamic networks are considered core pathologic substrates for idiopathic generalized epilepsy; however, the predominant epileptogenic epicenters within these networks are still largely unknown. The current study aims to identify these epicenters by resting-state functional connectivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS To identify epicenters within the corticothalamic net...
